Vote for Sheffield - the UK's Most Musical City!
Richard HawleySheffield has been nominated by Arts Council England to compete for the title of ‘Most Musical City'.

With a rich musical heritage ranging from The Long Blondes to the Human League and Arctic Monkeys to Warp Records - The Steel City has won the nomination for Yorkshire. The campaign to find the Most Musical City was launched by the Arts Council's ‘Take it away' scheme which makes musical instruments affordable and accessible for all. People can register their support and vote for their Most Musical City at www.mostmusicalcity.co.uk.

Sheffield singer-songwriter Richard Hawley is spearheading the city's campaign to win the public's vote, up against other big names including London, endorsed by Suggs, Birmingham backed by Jamelia and Newcastle supporter Sting, as well as Leicester legend Engelbert Humperdinck.Sheffield faces some stiff competition as the other cities competing to win are: Birmingham; Brighton; Bristol; Colchester; Leicester; Liverpool; London; Manchester; and Newcastle.

"From the unstoppable Arctic Monkeys to chamber music heavyweights Music in the Round, Sheffield is a city prolific in its music making and a hotbed of creativity. We're thrilled that Sheffield is representing Yorkshire to compete for Most Musical City. Without a doubt, the accolade belongs to Sheffield. Vote for Sheffield, vote for a phenomenon," said Mary Wright, Director of External Relations and Development at Arts Council England, Yorkshire.

Ann Gosse, Director of Culture, Sheffield City Council said "Sheffield is rightly proud of its strong musical heritage and current success on the international music scene. Our city has always had a creative and vibrant music scene that has produced famous musicians and internationally renowned groups from rock and pop to folk and classical.  Any night of the week you can enjoy an enviable choice of live music in one of the city's many venues. Without a doubt Sheffield deserves to win the official title of England's Most Musical City."

As well as finding the nation's favourite musical hub, Most Musical City will also help un-earth some of the stars of tomorrow. Unsigned bands and solo artists can register online for the chance to represent their Most Musical City and play in front of 5,000 festival-goers at this year's End of the Road Festival alongside some of the biggest names in British music. There are also 25 pairs of tickets to the festival up for grabs for anyone who registers their vote.

Strong contenders for the title of Most Musical City are Manchester, Liverpool and London, but with the winner to be decided by public vote, the competition is wide open.
