South Yorkshire’s fencers will be out to make a point when they take on competitors from across the UK at a key national tournament in Sheffield.

More than 200 fencers are set to take part in the Sheffield Open Fencing Tournament, which is being held at the English Institute of Sport – Sheffield (EISS) from May 17 - 18.

The six weapon event kicks off a series of four high profile fencing tournaments at the prestigious EISS during 2008.

It will be followed by the British Fencing Championships at the EISS from 12 – 13 July when 600 competitors will battle it out in front of more than 1,000 spectators.

The EISS, which is managed by Sheffield International Venues, will also host the Sheffield Under 20 Fencing Tournament on 6 September and the British Under 17 and Under 20 Championships from 11 - 12 October.

Andrew Basford, from the Sheffield Sword Club, which is based at the EISS, said: “Sheffield’s steel city history means we have a great association with fencing and it’s fantastic that now, all these years on, we have such a wonderful sporting venue in the city that can host this programme of high profile events.”

Paul Hudson, general manager of the EISS, said: “Fencing continues to be one of the fastest growing sports both on a local and national level and this programme of events highlights the diverse nature of the EISS in catering for mainstream and up and coming sports.

“It will be fantastic to see some of the country’s top fencers battling it out for regional and national titles and we hope that lots of people will turn out to support and encourage the competitors.”

Spectators are welcome at all the fencing events. For more information visit www.eis-sheffield.co.uk or call 0114 223 5600.
