Record breaking Sheffield Half Marathon on its marks for 2009
The 2008 Sheffield Half Marathon smashed all its targets……and this year’s race is already off to a flier.

The race in April attracted a record 5,500 runners, a massive £75,000 was raised for the chosen charities and the £500,000 mark was passed in funds raised since the Sheffield Half Marathon moved to Don Valley Stadium in 1991.

And as the run up to next year’s race is launched, organisers of the event, which is sponsored by SIG Insulations for a second year, already have over a hundred more entries than this time last year.

Margaret Lilley, chair of the Sheffield Half Marathon organising committee, said: “After the massive success of the race in April this year, we are very excited about the 2009 event. It is already promising to be the biggest yet, having had a higher number of entries than the same time last year, but we are continuing to urge people to sign up and get their running gear on!

“We have also seen in previous years that the South Yorkshire public is getting increasingly health conscious and the commitment to keeping fit and active is matched only by the generosity and charitable nature.

“Even during difficult times in the current credit crunch, it is great to see that people are still keen to get involved and do their bit to raise money for fantastic causes.

Richard Green, Sales Director for the northern division at sponsors SIG Insulations, said: “After the huge success of the 2008 race, we are delighted to once again pledge our support to the Sheffield Half Marathon. We are hoping to witness another record breaking year for the race.”

Organisers have also taken the number of charities that benefit from the event to 10, after welcoming the Sheffield Teenage Cancer Trust and Motor Neurone Disease Association South Yorkshire.

The existing charities are Macmillan Cancer Support, Myasthenia Gravis Association, RSPCA Sheffield, Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre South Yorkshire, Sheffield Wildlife Trust, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

Jane Ashton, from the Sheffield Teenage Cancer Trust, said: “We are thrilled to be involved in the 2009 Sheffield Half Marathon. All the charities have been given a huge boost from previous years, so we hope that this year’s race will be the biggest yet.”

The SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon and 3k Fun Run will take place on 26 April 2009 at Sheffield International Venues managed facility Don Valley Stadium from 9:30am.
