Two new sports join line up for 2010 BUCS Championships

British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) has introduced two new sport disciplines - trampolining and indoor archery - to its 2010 Championships programme, which is being hosted in Sheffield and surrounding Yorkshire venues from 10 -14 March.

Trampolining adds to the growing list of Olympic sports featured at the Championships, which already includes badminton, table tennis, swimming and hockey. It will take place at the Sheffield International Venues (SIV)-managed Hillsborough Leisure Centre.

The indoor archery event will be held at the Sheffield United Academy which further reinforces the club’s commitment to the Championships following the announcement that they will be playing host to the men’s and women’s football finals at Bramall Lane on 10 March.

Six thousand elite university-aged athletes will attend the BUCS Championships to compete across 26 sports and utilise many international standard sporting facilities operated by SIV such as the English Institute of Sport – Sheffield (EIS Sheffield) and Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.

Karen Rothery, BUCS Chief Executive said: “The addition of trampolining and indoor archery to the BUCS Championships programme is a hugely positive step and illustrates our desire to continue developing the scope of the event to include as many students and sporting disciplines as possible.

“It is fantastic that these new sports will be held in top quality Sheffield venues, the indoor archery at Sheffield United Academy and the trampolining at Hillsborough Leisure Centre, reflecting the numerous first-class facilities Yorkshire boasts.”

The BUCS Championships, is supported by Yorkshire Forward, the Regional Development Agency for Yorkshire and the Humber, and the event will be a fantastic opportunity for the region to showcase what it has to offer to the 400 supporting volunteers, 6,000 participating athletes and many supporters.
