GB Volleyball stars celebrate student's success

Two volleyball stars from the Sheffield-based GB squad took time out of training to celebrate the achievements of pupils from four city schools.

Jenn Thom and Joanne Morgan, part of the GB squad based at the English Institute of Sport – Sheffield (EIS Sheffield), presented awards to children who have completed the six-week Playing for Success (PfS) programme at the venue.

Almost 60 children from Greenlands Junior School, Stradbroke Primary School, Windmill Hill Primary School and St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School received a prize and certificate at the presentation night. Three children from each school were awarded special prizes.

Jakki Marshall, centre co-ordinator for Playing for Success at EIS Sheffield, which is operated by Sheffield International Venues (SIV), said: “Playing for Success continues to go from strength to strength at EIS Sheffield and hundreds of local children have now benefitted from this programme.

“We are very grateful to Jenn and Joanne for taking the time to attend the presentation night and they were a great inspiration to the children.”

The PfS study support centre at EIS Sheffield aims to raise standards in literacy, numeracy and ICT and increasing self esteem in children aged 10 – 14 years old.

Sessions are designed to motivate young people to learn through sporting activities, supported by elite athletes who train at the venue. The sessions use state-of-the-art IT equipment and the latest games consoles to provide health, literacy and numeracy challenges.
