One of the key figures responsible for bringing scores of major conferences and events and millions of pounds to Sheffield’s economy has been invited to share the city’s success story at Europe’s leading industry show.

Dominic Stokes, general manager of SIV Events has been selected to present on the ‘Best of British’ stage at the 2012 International Confex show, which for the first time this year will take place at ExCel London.

Dominic will talk in front of a live audience and panel about SIV’s experience of transforming Sheffield City Hall, a traditional concert hall into a major convention centre capable of hosting international business events.

It forms part of this year’s Confex show and follows Sheffield International Venues’ (SIV) success at the Eventia Awards where Sheffield City Hall was crowned Best Event Venue of the Year 2011.

SIV Events is part of Sheffield International Venues (SIV), which boasts 19 leisure and entertainment venues, and is responsible for procuring major events for the company.

Dominic said: “I’m honoured to have been invited to present at such a high profile industry show. In successfully being part of the team that has been attracting and delivering events such as the Liberal Democrat conference, MINT conference and Arctic Monkeys concert, the sector is now looking to SIV and Sheffield to learn from our success.

“Having the opportunity to highlight the city’s achievements on such an important national platform can only support our aim to bring even more events and, therefore investment, to Sheffield in the future.”

Previously held at Earls Court, the 2012 Confex, from March 6-8, has moved to ExCel London to celebrate the Olympics in London.

Alongside Sheffield Convention Bureau, SIV will be showcasing its Olympic-standard venues, including the English Institute of Sport Sheffield, iceSheffield and Ponds Forge Sheffield, with a growing number of organisations using sporting backdrops for corporate events

On the Sheffield stand, B1212, East Midlands Trains (EMT), who work in partnership with SIV, will be offering event organisers discounted and complimentary travel options along the East Midlands Trains routes into the city for site visits to our venues.

In August 2012, SIV, together with partners including Sheffield City Council and the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, will stage a three-day Fans Festival. The free event at Don Valley Stadium will feature a huge screen showing live events from London 2012 for Olympic spectators.

Other event highlights for 2012 include the FIA & Matrix Flame 2012 Conference and Ball at SIV’s Ponds Forge International Sports Centre and the Magna Science Adventure Centre Sheffield in June and the Olympic torch relay in the same month.
