Grieg Lyric Suite
Beethoven Piano Concerto No.3
Nielsen Symphony No.5
An epic journey from glacial unease to defiant triumph, Nielsen’s Fifth Symphony – distinctive for its militaristic rhythms rapped out on anarchic side drum – emerged during the First World War as an expression of the human spirit that grows out of pain and chaos. Beethoven’s dramatic Third Piano Concerto is performed by Martin Roscoe, one of today’s most admired and versatile pianists who has been described by the Daily Telegraph as “... a pianist who both thinks and offers full-blooded playing of breadth and depth.” The BBC Philharmonic and its new Principal Guest Conductor, John Storgårds, begin with the folk-inspired miniatures of Grieg’s Lyric Suite.
