Weber Overture: Der Freischutz
Prokofiev Violin Concerto No.1
Beethoven Overture: Egmont
Sibelius Symphony No.5

Alexander Liebreich leads the Berlin Symphony Orchestra in Weber’s famous overture to Der Freischütz which lifts the curtain on a wonderful musical evocation of treachery, intrigue and magic bullets. Agata Szymczewska, takes the challenging solo role in Prokofiev’s wistful and mysterious First Violin Concerto: its gently lyrical hushed moments are enchanting, its mercurial scherzo full of fantasy. Romanticism tangles with dark forces in Beethoven’s stirring overture in which the tragic Count Egmont dies, a hero. Sibelius’s groundbreaking Fifth Symphony is at different times shadowy, enigmatic and uncertain, yet it culminates in a joyful and triumphant finale with majestic brass instruments ringing out in crashing chords.
