Rossini Overture: William Tell
Liszt Piano Concerto No.2
Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet – excerpts
Rossini’s overture to his final opera William Tell has taken on a life of its own due largely to the triumphant gallop with which it ends. However, its three preceding tableaux – a peaceful evocation of dawn, a violent storm and an enchanting rural
scene – are all equally captivating. Prokofiev’s wonderful ballet score Romeo and Juliet superbly captures the seething enmity between the Montagues and Capulets and the tragic fate of Shakespeare’s “star-crossed lovers”. Joining the excellent Heinrich Schiff is another Hallé favourite, Polina Leschenko, who performs Liszt’s virtuoso Second Piano Concerto; a piece in which lyric and dramatic elements battle it out for supremacy.
