Wagner Tristan und Isolde: Prelude and Liebestod
Mahler Rückert-Lieder
Shostakovich Symphony No.9
Nikolaj Znaider’s reputation as a world-class conductor continues apace with invitations from top orchestras all over the world. At the end of the Second World War Shostakovich was commissioned to write a grand symphony in praise of Stalin. Incredibly, what transpired was a work of biting wit and satire that landed him in deep trouble with the Soviet authorities. Mahler’s eloquent Rückert-Lieder
is a collection of songs on themes ranging from love and life, to loneliness and death. They are sung here by one of the most sought-after mezzos, Katarina
Karneus. The concert opens passionately with Wagner’s exquisite love music for Tristan and Isolde.
